The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world weighing in at only 2 to 6 pounds. The Chihuahua is believed to be the oldest breed on the American continent and takes its name from the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. The dainty Chihuahua is an alert cheeky dog with a compact rectangular body. They have a large eyes and ears that are set well apart. Although little, the Chihuahua is relatively long lived often living to fifteen years or more, they strong-willed, intensely loyal and normally become very attached to their owners. They make great companions and love to give and receive affection. The Chihuahua cares little for people, or other pets, that come between itself and its owner. While they do make wonderful pets and bring a great deal of joy to everyone around them, they need a good home and deserve proper care, the well-being of a Chihuahua puppy depends on it

There are two distinct breed types, one with a long soft textured coat, and the other with a short smooth coat. The Chihuahua is adored for his small size, they are a bright eyed, dainty dog perfect in every way for apartment living. Most breeders recommend adopting a Chihuahua puppy between the ages of 4 - 12 months when they are more mature and less prone to injury.

The Chihuahua definitely requires a greater level of care than some other breeds particularly when your Chihuahua is still a puppy. Although there is a lot of Chihuahua care information available these days, much of it is not specific to this breed and it needs to be. While not fragile, the Chihuahua is prone to certain ailments.
